About The Swing Dance Company

The Swing Dance Company organises jive and swing classes & dances in Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex. Our popular 10 week courses offer an easy introduction to learning jive & swing with fun and friendly teachers. Workshops, social dances and practice nights allow plenty of opportunities for more experienced dancers to continue their enjoyment and development of various swing dance styles.

Absolute Beginners Jive Courses

The absolute beginners jive course is ideal for those with no previous dance experience. Our b eginners DVD covers exactly the same material, so is a handy aid for those on courses, or as an alternative for anybody who cannot attend our classes.

Further Swing Jive Courses

Two Intermediates and three Inters Plus swingjive courses follow, each with different material. During these courses we start to develop new rhythms to provide exciting moves. Within a couple of years new dancers pick up all our swingjive moves.

We recommend that new dancers spend some time having fun and building up their confidence on the dance floor with swing-jive before learning pure lindy hop. However, once you are ready, or for faster learners or those with other dancing experience, we recommend learning the lindy hop!

Lindy Hop

Lindy hop is the original swing dance, you can read a history here, it requires further technique and a bit of fancy footwork. We are passionate about this dance style and we love to see others enjoying it too. In fact, our swing jive courses are designed to enable inexperienced dancers to build the skills to start dancing lindy hop, we are delighted that the local lindy hop community has swelled during the last 10 years. The Swing Dance Company runs lindy hop courses each term.

Other Dance Styles

The Swing Dance Company is also actively promoting other swing dance styles such as Balboa, Collegiate Shag and tap through one off workshops and mini-courses. We also like to throw in workshops from other dance styles which we consider may be of interest to our customers, previous examples include hip hop, belly dancing and ballet! These are generally taught by our regular teachers who have experience in other dance fields, so you can guarantee that these classes will be fun and friendly.

DJs, demonstrators, coaches and admin staff all play their part to make sure your experience with The Swing Dance Company is unforgettable.

Social, Themed & Live Music Dance Events

The Swing Dance Company organises many dance events throughout the year. These are open for everybody to attend. The dance dates page has a full list of dates and venues. The highlight of each term is our End of Term Ball, where we pull out all the stops to give everybody a really memorable night out! Each ball features one of the UKs finest bands for dancing, a high class cabaret and lots of treats and surprises. The end of term ball is always either black tie, themed or period dress, some of our other dances also have themes. The music at each event is organised to fit the theme of the event.

Music

The music defines us and our DJs search long and hard to find stimulating music to dance to from the 1920s to the present day. We visit Big Band Swing, Rhythm & Blues and Rock 'n' Roll along the way, we call on the biggest artist in the world such as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. We're not afraid to add contemporary popular music or the latest wave of swing albums produced by pop and jazz artists. There are many other musical spices that we add to the blend, which give our classes and dances a fantastic atmosphere.

Swingeasy

We run very sociable weekly Swingeasy practice evenings, where two classes recap moves from our jive courses and add an endless stream of interesting new moves. A DJ plays great practice music between and after the classes.
