About The Swing Dance Company

The Swing Dance Company organises jive and swing classes & dances in Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex. Our popular 10 week courses offer an easy introduction and structure to learning jive & swing with fun and friendly teachers.

Workshops, social dances and practice nights allow plenty of opportunities for more experienced dancers to continue their enjoyment and development of various swing dance styles.

The majority of our classes are organised into set 10 week courses taking place over three terms each year. These courses are thorough and well structured. As its name suggests, the absolute beginners course is ideal for those with no previous experience. Our Beginners Course DVD covers exactly the same material, so is a handy aid for those on courses, or as a learning tool for anybody who cannot attend our classes.

" Two intermediates courses follow on from the beginners course, each with different material. These can be taken once the beginners course has been completed, so within a year new dancers can have picked up all of our beginners and intermediates material.

Three more courses at advanced level mean that there is still plenty more to challenge students. At intermediate level we introduce some new rhythms and techniques, as we move on from the no funny footwork guarantee we offer in beginners! At advanced level we start to develop these new rhythms to provide some exciting and intricate new moves, which are mainly taken from lindy hop and fused with our jive moves.

Lindy hop requires further technique and a bit of fancy footwork.

We recommend that new dancers spend some time having fun and building up their confidence on the dance floor by dancing our swing-jive fusion before learning pure lindy hop. However, for those who are ready and willing, The Swing Dance Company offers clear and structured courses, mini-courses and workshops in lindy hop.

The Swing Dance Company is also actively promoting other swing dance styles such as Balboa, Collegiate Shag and tap through one off workshops. We also like to throw in workshops from other dance styles which we consider may be of interest to our customers, previous examples include hip hop, belly dancing and ballet! These are generally taught by our regular teachers who have experience in other dance fields, so you can guarantee that these classes will be fun and friendly.

There are an extraordinary variety of personalities on the team, which make every class and dance really special! DJs, demonstrators, coaches and admin staff all play their part to make sure your experience with The Swing Dance Company is unforgettable.

To complement the classes, The Swing Dance Company organises many dance events throughout the year. These are open for everybody to attend, not just our students.

The dance dates page has a full list of dates and venues, however dances include the monthly Pendulum Swing event at Admiral Lord Nelson School in Portsmouth, our Saturday night tour, which takes us to many other areas. The highlight of each term is our End of Term Ball, where we pull out all the stops to give everybody a really memorable night out! Each ball features one of the UKs finest bands for dancing to, a high class cabaret and lots of treats and surprises. The end of term ball is always either black tie, themed or period dress, some of our other dances also have themes.

Our DJs search long and hard to find stimulating music to dance to from the 1920s to the present day. We visit Big Band Swing, Rhythm & Blues and Rock 'n' Roll along the way, but also add contemporary popular music, such as Van Morrison and the Stray Cats, not to mention the latest wave of swing albums produced by pop and jazz artists such as Robbie Williams, Westlife and Jamie Cullum. There are many other musical spices that we add to the blend, which give our classes and dances a fantastic atmosphere.

We also run very sociable weekly Swingeasy practice evenings in Fareham, where two classes recap moves from our jive courses and add an endless stream of interesting new moves. A DJ plays great practice music between and after the classes. Lindy Hop Heaven is a weekly mecca for our lindy hoppers in Fareham Working Mens Club on a Thursday.

We are also available for private tuition, or to spice up corporate events and private parties.
